Church Renovation Could Provide Work For Manassas Plumbers

A recent project to turn an Arlington, Virginia church into a residential complex and shopping centre could provide Manassas plumbers with an excellent job opportunity.

The renovation, approved by the Arlington Presbyterian Church itself and developed in conjunction with the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing, would see the 1931 church taken down and replaced with an affordable 142-apartment complex for underprivileged citizens. A 7,000 square foot prayer space, a child-care centre, a shopping area and a coffee shop would round out the new structure that is aiming for a 2017 opening and which represents the culmination of a three-year effort to find ways to renovate the church.

This plan, which the church hopes to submit to the Arlington Council Board sometime next year, was approved less than a week after the town’s Presbyterian community launched a campaign to find alternatives to the demolition of the church, and has drawn criticism from local preservation groups. The church’s pastor countered by stating that these renovation plans represent the church’s vision of social change and discipleship, and that the church was doing its duty by taking advantage of the land along Columbia Pike to build something of worth to the community.

The blueprints for this project have also been found to be in line with the area’s Form Based Code, meaning the Arlington Presbyterian Church will not have to seek additional density from the Arlington County Board. The renovations, which are due to start straight after approval by the Council Board next year, will include a full upgrade on fixtures such as heating and plumbing, meaning Manassas plumbers can make some money while doing something good for the Arlington Presbyterian community.

The Arlington Presbyterian Church was first established in 1908, and its first sanctuary was built two years later, in 1910. The current church was re-built in 1920, after the original wooden edifice burned down.
