Devon Secondary School Pupils Experiment With 3D Engraving

10 January, 2014: A secondary school in Devon, England has recently expanded the range of possibilities for its pupils by acquiring a laser cutter and a 3D engraving and printing machine. 

Queen Elizabeth’s School in Crediton took delivery of these two new pieces of equipment last November, with the intent of familiarising its students with the 3D technology being used by an increasing number of high-profile companies and corporations. 

With the new machines students will be able to cut perfectly accurate moulds and apply 3D engraving techniques to their surfaces. The printer, on the other hand, will allow these teenagers to bring models designed on their computers to life in a matter of minutes. 

Its pupils, and in particular those on the Design & Technology courses, whom these machines are particularly going to benefit, enthusiastically received both additions to the school’s resources. Interviewed by local newspaper, Mid Devon Star, two Year 12 pupils both acknowledged the wealth of possibilities the new equipment would open up for them and their would-be designer classmates. 

The schoolteachers also declare themselves rather satisfied with the potential opportunities brought about by the two new machines. The recently appointed Head of Technology has declared on record, his thanks to the school’s governors for the generous acquisition. The Board itself has revealed that this gesture falls in line with their policy of letting students experiment with as wide a range of technologies as possible, and to provide them with the best quality materials to enable this goal. 

The source interviewed by the Mid Devon Star concluded by stating that these objectives are particularly relevant for students in the Sixth Form, whose learning curriculum is increasingly streamlined towards their future field of activity and in this case, computer design and 3D engraving. 

Queen Elizabeth is a community college specialising in the technological field. It is Devon’s only boarding school, and currently houses around 1600 students, although only around 40 of those are actually boarders.
