School Visits to China Among Destinations For Virginia High School’s ‘Passport Club’

Waynesboro High School, in Virginia, USA, has launched a programme with the intention of educating its students through travel. Dubbed the Passport Club, this new initiative provides members with school visits to China and other destinations, one of which is to take place later this month.

The March 28 trip, which will be attended by a total of six students, will see the Passport Club head to Beijing, the Chinese capital. This city’s well-balanced mix of exotic culture and customs, dizzying atmosphere and just enough culture to fulfil educational requirements, has helped make it perhaps the most popular destination for school visits to China. In their upcoming trip, the Virginia high school’s travel-mad group will be able to experience it all first hand.

The Passport Club first opened its doors within Waynesboro High School last year, with the intention of enabling international travel for that institution’s pupils. This objective was first accomplished with a trip to Costa Rica, followed by the present year’s journey to China and a planned trip to Italy next year.

On this outing to Beijing, students from Waynesboro High were hoping to liaise with their sister school in the world’s most densely populated country. However, cultural differences led responsible parties to adopt a slightly different tack, allowing students to become accustomed with Chinese culture before starting to work with the local school.

For now, expenses for these school visits to China are being paid out of the students’ own pockets, as well as with the funds raised through initiatives such as a yard sale. However, the school hopes to have a scholarship in place to help with this programme in the very near future, thereby contributing to lighten the financial load each of these students must incur in in order to participate in the Passport Club’s trips.
