Essential Hotel Collection Customers Help Boost February Numbers For Anguilla

Essential Hotel Collection customers booking a hotel in Anguilla could be among the parties responsible for the volume of tourist traffic in the island rising in the month of February, as demonstrated in a recent official survey quoted by press outlet Anguilla News.

According to them, the numbers for Anguillan tourism experienced a sharp increase in the first two months of 2014, due mostly to a combination of winter visitors from abroad and day-trippers from neighbouring islands. According to the study in question, the month of February recorded an increase of 11.2% in relation to the same period in 2013, with the total number of visitors coming to the island numbering in excess of 16.350.

Of these, 3.2% more than in 2013 (a total of 7.026) were stay-over tourists from abroad, who booked their stay on the island through companies such as Essential Hotel Collection. Over 98% of visitors in this particular demographic were in Anguilla for purposes of pleasure, with the remainder coming over on business. The most represented nationalities among these visitors were German, Canadian and American, while visitors from the Dutch East Indies decreased in number in comparison to other recent periods.

In a curious turn of events, a staggering 91.5% of these visitors were found to have arrived at or left Anguilla through one of its seaports, rather than by air. In fact, while the island does possess an airport, it accounted for only 8.5% of February’s departures from the island – a mere 1.860 people – and only 17.7% of all tourist arrivals, with the rest being attributable to the island’s two main ports.

February is a traditionally strong period for Anguillan tourism, with the two highest volumes in the past 20 years both being recorded in this month. The 2014 figure is, in fact, the second largest since 1993, losing only to the same period in 2007.
