A group of pupils from the Voyager Academy at Peterborough, United Kingdom, recently used a school travel service to connect with students from a similarly-named school across the Atlantic, in Durham, North Carolina, USA.

During this exchange, which took place last Easter, the group of 18 pupils who travelled from the UK to represent their school had the opportunity of acting as ambassadors for their Academy, all while getting a taste of what it feels like to be a student in the United States. Each of the visiting students was placed with a host family in Durham for the duration of the initiative, which further enabled them to immerse themselves in the life of an American teenager in North Carolina.

To be considered for this opportunity, each student at the Voyager Academy was required to state their case, in writing, as to why they would make a first-rate international ambassador. This was then followed by a reference-gathering process and an interview, before the final selection was made. In the end, a total of 18 pupils were chosen, who then had to raise roughly half the amount required to pay for the school travel service. A series of activities, including car washes, grocery packing, bake sales and Christmas sales, helped the students achieve their goal and pay for this unique opportunity.

This exchange was only the latest in a series of joint events organised by both Voyager Academies since establishing a partnership in 2013. Along with previous contests and joint schemes, it has contributed to pique the interest of a number of Peterborough students, who are now reportedly interesting in undertaking university studies in the United States.

The Voyager Academy is part of the Comberton Academy Trust family of schools, which manages a number of other academies around the area.
