22 July, 2014: Commissioning a bespoke diamond engagement ring from an independent designer such as Amanda Mansell is becoming the popular choice amongst newly-engaged couples these days. The modern bride seems to be placing more focus and priority than ever before on having a completely original and unique ring, thus shunning the generic offerings of the high street markets. Consequently, a Brooklyn based printing company has devised a new, free iPhone app, which enables couples to design and create their own rings from the comfort of their home.

The 3D printing group, MakerBot, has recently released its new app, which allows anyone to design and print their own customized diamond engagement ring, complete with perfect size and shape. The design is then sent wirelessly to a MakerBot 3D printer who then creates the physical rendering of the desired ring.

The app's capability extends past engagement rings and can include bracelets and even household items. The 3D printer, like a traditional inkjet printer, builds up the object using layers of material that, in this case, is usually plastic.

The MakerBot app is the 3D printing community's latest effort to make technology, known as rapid prototyping, available in the home. It is possible that it could lead to 'mini factories' in consumer's homes allowing them to print anything from jewellery to everyday household items such as replacement parts for broken home appliances.

However, unless a plastic ring is what the bride wants, couples will still need the skills and talents of bespoke jewellery designers such as Amanda Mansell to turn their MakerBot design into a real life metal and stone diamond engagement ring.
