09, October 2014: With a name "Lewisburg", one would think that the area was once founded by a man bearing the name Lewis. Nothing can be further from the truth however as the man who was responsible for putting Lewisburg on the map is named, "Ludwig Derr".

Ludwig Derr first came to what would become Lewisburg in 1784. He purchased the area from the family of William Penn and started his own community. While most of the neighboring areas were routinely attacked by Native Americans, the city of Lewisburg was able to maintain a relatively peaceful community. So, how did the name change came to be?

Most historians believe that the change in name came as a result of translating the name of Ludwig to its American counterpart. Since "Ludwig" becomes "Louis" in the US, naming the place "Louis" came to mind; however, residents would like to respect the fact that Ludwig was of Germanic descent so they had decided to use its German spelling which is "Lewis". The traditional "burg" used by Germans where referring to a place was attached to "Lewis".

Lewisburg, though, is more than just a place inspired by a German founder. It is actually one of the places that you can spend time in when you are in Pennsylvania.
