Researchers Investigate Link Between Gluten-Free Diet And Arthritis

Portland, OR - February 11, 2015 - The gluten-free diet is one of the most popular dietary programs today. It is followed or practiced by many individuals due to different health reasons, such as easing digestive problems. However, it seems that the gluten-free diet may not only be beneficial for individuals with celiac disease, but also those with arthritis.

Researchers are investigating the link between a gluten-free diet and arthritis. There is a widespread belief that gluten intake can trigger a wide variety of symptoms in some people including joint pain. While some research findings support this belief, there are also studies that suggest that a gluten-free diet has no effect on joint pain at all.

Alessio Fasano, MD, director of the mucosal biology research center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, believes that gluten triggers gut inflammation, which also causes the activation of T lymphocytes. This inflammation is believed to migrate into the joints and cause pain.

“Gluten is usually found in grain foods such as barley and wheat. Celiac disease is a condition that results in nutrient malabsorption. According to experts, arthritis symptoms such as stiffness and joint pain are also experienced by individuals with celiac disease. It is believed that intake of gluten for arthritis patients could cause the same negative effects suffered by those with celiac disease. Albeit many studies suggest that those with arthritis should, as much as possible, avoid eating gluten, there are also those that claim being gluten-free doesn’t necessarily equate to being arthritis-free. Many argue that gluten can certainly trigger the symptoms of arthritis, but its absence does not make a person less susceptible to the condition.

“Arthritis can be caused by many factors such as weight, age, activity levels and eating habits. Those who do not consume gluten, but are overweight, or are of an older age, can still be highly susceptible to the condition,” added O’Sullivan.

A healthy diet and daily exercise routine are recommended to reduce one’s risk of developing arthritis.
