Everyone has a junk drawer, whether at home, work, or other places people spend time.  Dave Hull has taken the items in these junk drawers and used the multiplane photography process to produce images accompanied by words of wisdom, wit, or whimsy.  These photographs will make the viewer reflect or just smile.

What is Multiplane Photography?

Traditionally used in motion picture cameras used in the animation process, multiplane camera pieces of artwork move past the camera at various speeds and distances from one another which creates a three-dimensional effect.  Similar images can be seen on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Pinocchio (1940).

Hull has built a multiplane camera for still photography and has captured this effect in his photographs.  With 10 layers of glass with 2 inches in between each layer, the photographs captured are truly amazing.  After choosing the perfect items from the junk drawer and placing them on the glass, lights are placed and adjusted to create the perfect effect.  The camera is placed over the glass panes, pointed downward, and the three-dimensional picture is taken.

Some of the photographs created by Hull include:

- Dragon
- Coins
- String Theory
- Bears
- Owls
- Several photos for the children’s book Swing High…Swing Low
