The Birthplace of an Iwo Jima Soldier

May 2013- One of the decisive battles fought during the Second World War was the Battle of Iwo Jima. The battle lasted for more than a month and was considered to be the bloodiest battle in the War in the Pacific. On the American side, more than 6,000 lost their lives; while the Japanese side lost about 22,000 soldiers. Because of the importance and gravity of this battle, cities and towns who have “contributed” a soldier or two are mighty proud of these heroes. One such town is the city of Yorktown.

Yorktown sits within the Dewitt County. It has a total land area of 1.7 square miles and was founded by Captain John York after whom the town has been named. One of its most notable personalities happened to be Harlon Block, one of the soldiers featured in the epic picture, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. While Harlon Block was an active part of the Second World War, his father, Edward Frederick Block was a veteran of the First World War. Harlon came on to raise another US flag at Mount Suribachi.

Of course, Yorktown has a lot more to offer than just being the birthplace of a war hero. Because of its contribution to the different wars, it comes as no surprise that one of its tourist attractions is the Yorktown Battlefield and Visitor Center. The said center is considered to be a national park and is known to include a tour of the battlefield earthworks, among other things. Yorktown Victory Center is another tourist attraction that deals with the life during the Revolutionary War. It is also worthwhile to drop by the Watermen’s Museum as well as the schooner Alliance.

If you are interested in taking a tour of Yorktown, you would need to book yourself in one of the Yorktown Texas hotels.
