06 December, 2013: The illustrious 34th Rolex Middle Sea Race (MSR) was won by the majestic Swan 60 Emma this month. Sicily villas located along the island’s coastline had front row seats from which to view the legendary race as the participants circumnavigated the island during the race, which was 600 plus nautical miles.

The race was wonderfully impressive this year with challenging conditions that showcased the skills and performance of the entrants. The MSR, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, began on October 19th. The epic race set off in style from the gorgeous, historic Grand Harbour and followed a course that led crews around Sicily and some of the other beautiful islands in the surrounding area.

It was a race to be remembered, especially for the team of the Swan 60 Emma, who completed the course in 4 days, 8 hours, 42 minutes and 39 seconds. Dr. Johann Killinger, the owner of the Swan 60 Emma, was also at the helm during the race. Dr. Killinger commented on Emma’s impressive performance as her awards and accomplishments kept racking up during the race. Emma came in first overall out of all of the ORC boats and third overall out of the IRC entries. Emma had the best start coming out of the scenic Malta Harbour and the crew had great motivation throughout the race. They displayed expert handling through conditions that included varying winds from 0 to 20 knots both upwind and downwind. Coastal Sicily villas would have been the perfect venue from which to watch the Emma go by.

With the sun setting over the Malta Yacht Club the Swan 60 Emma crossed the finish line in spectacular style. The beautiful and much sought after Swan Mediterranean Challenge trophy was awarded to the swan 60 Emma team on Saturday during the prestigious prize giving celebration.

The Rolex Middle Sea Race was established in 1968 and quickly became known as a highly rated offshore classic. The changeable conditions and challenging course entices expert skippers and crews every year, and the joy of the race is enhanced by the spectacular scenery. Companies, such as Holiday Homes in Italy, offer many Sicily villas for rent in prime locations that offer stunning views of this exhilarating race.
