Mumbai, 7 September 2009 – DHL, the world’s leading logistics company and Blue Dart, South Asia's number one express air and integrated transportation, distribution and logistics company, together organised Volunteer Day 2009 on the 5th September to promote the spirit of volunteerism amongst its employees in India.

Under this social initiative which began in 2008, over 2000 Blue Dart and DHL volunteers across India participated in a host of events ranging from working with under privileged children, blood donation camps, cleanup drives, resource mobilisation, to conducting awareness campaigns across the country.

In Mumbai a unique activity, DHL Deliver Help Drive, is scheduled from 3rd to 13th of September 2009. Anyone interested to contribute in kind, just has to call the DHL helpline number 6741 2737 or email at [email protected]. DHL came up with this unusual initiative on recognizing the generous spirit of Mumbaikars, who often have much to give, but are at a loss as to where they should send their donations. Clothes, toys, bed sheets, utensils, books, etc are all welcome and will be conveniently collected from the doorstep of the donor by a DHL representative - a simple but noble way to help the needy and impact their lives.

Other activities in Mumbai included cleaning mangroves at Carter Road, mending toys for underprivileged children, and a blood donation camp at the Blue Dart corporate office. Through such initiatives, the massive work force of DHL & Blue Dart employees extends their support to create a positive impact in the community. Similar activities also took place on the 5th September 2009 across major cities like New Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore.

Malcolm Monteiro, Senior VP & Area Director-South Asia, DHL Express Asia Pacific further adds, “Through the DHL Volunteer Day we aim to inculcate a spirit of volunteerism among employees and encourage them to contribute back to society. The DHL “Can Do” spirit was evident last year and following the success, we are confident that DHL Volunteer Day 2009 will not only help the community but also instill the spirit of volunteerism amongst our employees.”

“As a leading corporate in the logistics and express industry we believe it is our responsibility to give back to society by making a difference to those less privileged than ourselves. Sustainability is part of DHL’s business approach and we operate on the fundamental belief that business thrives where society thrives.” says Christoph Remund, CEO, DHL Lemuir Logistics Pvt. Ltd

Speaking on the occasion, Anil Khanna, Managing Director, Blue Dart Express Ltd. said, “Volunteering has a meaningful, positive impact on the community. We all have the power to help each other and a kind heart is all it takes. Through Volunteer Day we would like to project that, in order to motivate others, you must first become a source of motivation yourself.”

Following the success of the program in Asia Pacific last year, DHL has extended the footprint of the activity to include Africa, Europe and Latin America this year. As part of DHL Volunteer Day activities this year, from 1st to 6th September, more than 15,000 employees, customers and business partners in over 40 countries across Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe and Latin America carried out over 70 community projects that support various local causes.
