Orlando, FL – September 6, 2016 - The number of people who suffer from arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) continues to grow. This condition is not just painful, but also debilitating. It may also cause sufferers to have sleep problems.
Experts highlight the possible link between the human body clock and rheumatoid arthritis. Many RA sufferers find it difficult having long or good quality sleep on a daily basis. This has led some scientists to investigate whether there is a connection between the condition and the human body clock.
In a study presented at the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR), it was revealed that the link between rheumatoid arthritis and the human body clock may be due to a certain genetic pathway.
This arthritic condition is believed to cause some disruptions in the circadian rhythms or the internal body clock. The lead author of the study was the Chairman of the Center for Rheumatic Diseases.
The lead author suggests that identification of this pathway may help scientists discover more about the 24-hour symptom cycle. It is believed that this 24-hour symptom cycle occurs among individuals with rheumatoid arthritis who suffer from morning stiffness as well as worsening joint pain.
The researchers conducted the study in the hospitals of Japan. Out of 200 participants, 61% of them suffered from sleep disturbance. They also revealed that participants with active arthritis suffered from severe sleep disturbances.
According to Rex MacCallum, MD, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology, Duke University Medical Center, the study showed that participants with active rheumatoid arthritis were more susceptible to suffering from sleep disturbances.
They are also more likely to sleep less and have the tendency to wake up at night time. Inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joints are believed to cause the sleep disturbances. Having inadequate and poor quality of sleep are believed to significantly reduce the quality of life of sufferers.
There are many arthritis sufferers nowadays who resort to the use of pain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medications are believed to significantly ease pain and reduce inflammation.
Some arthritis sufferers claim that they have achieved improved mobility and improvements in sleep through the use of these medications. Unfortunately, these pharmaceutical drugs may be associated with side effects.
Safer alternatives such as glucosamine supplements are thought to help reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness. It is believed to be a better alternative mainly because it provides potential benefits without causing side effects.
