21日、愛の第一教会の牧師、また韓国のプロテスタント界を代表する連合機関である韓基総(韓国基督教総連合会)の代表を務めてきたチョン・グァンフン牧師が韓基総の代表を辞任することを発表した。

韓基総は1989年に保守プロテスタントの教会を代表する連合機関として設立された。キリスト教徒が最も多い韓国では、宗教界だけでなく政財界に絶大な影響力を持つ組織にまで成長し、韓国プロテスタント界の最大組織として浮かび上がった。

このような圧倒的な力を有する組織にまで急成長を遂げた韓基総だが、近年は組織運営のあり方や、その代表を選出する際の金権選挙疑惑などが原因で衰退の一途を辿っていた。また、政界への影響力を利用し、韓基総に属さず急成長を遂げているキリスト教新派に対しての差別行為や、強制改宗プログラムといった人権侵害とも呼べる悪行の疑惑もあった。

チョン牧師は2019年、韓基総の代表となっての最初の記者会見から文在寅政権に批判的な態度を取ってきたが、去る8月15日に光化門にて、文在寅大統領の退陣を主張する大規模な集会を開催し物議を醸した。残念なことに韓国国内の人々が注目したのは、そのメッセージではなく、新型コロナに対する防疫指針を完全に無視し、集会を実施、自身もマスクをせずに演説を行った点である。また当時の集会に集まった多くの人々がマスクをしていなかったことも問題視されている。集会後、自身を含め多くの集会参加者に新型コロナの陽性反応が確認され、一時は抑え込みに成功していた韓国でまたもや新型コロナウイルスが猛威を振るっている。そして感染者の多くを占めるのが、チョン牧師が代表を務める愛の第一教会の信徒たちであると報道されている。

新型コロナウイルスが韓国に拡散し始めた今年２月、新天地教会内での集団感染が発生、その責任から教会の代表やその他の責任者が逮捕・拘束されているが、その当時、大統領は通常の生活を送るよう国民にメッセージを送っており、また新天地教会は政府の指針に初めから全面協力していた。政府の水際対策失敗の責任転嫁の対象として使われていると批判的な意見もあるが、韓基総のような連合組織に所属しない新宗派は政府やメディアの格好の餌食となっている。

防疫指針を守り政府に協力的だったにも関わらず集団感染の被害者となってしまった挙げ句、スケープゴートとして政治利用された新天地教会、そして防疫指針に従わず、コロナウイルス拡散の責任を問われる強大な連合組織。今後、韓国政府の対応にどのような違いがあるのか注目が集まる。衰退したとはいえ、現在もプロテスタント界を代表する連合機関というイメージが根強い韓基総だが、その地位を守ることができるのかは未知数である。
