Growth In Tourism Continues To Strengthen Italy’s Economy

04 December, 2013: The statistics are in, and prove that Italy is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. The recent World Travel Market Vision Conference 2013, held in Rimini, reported encouraging data provided by Euromonitor International showing that, despite the sluggish world economy, there has been consistent growth in the tourism market for Italy. In 2012 over 12 million Germans chose to visit Italy making it the number one vacation destination for Germany. Over 4 million tourists came from the UK and over 3 million from the US. Rentals of Sicilian, Umbrian and Amalfi villas have become much more accessible and luxurious. Travel companies such as Holiday Homes in Italy provide tourists with a wide array of holiday homes to choose from, complete with amenities and added luxuries. Italy therefore, is a very reasonable and desirable destination for families and larger groups.

Italy has been ranked 5th in the world in terms of inbound travellers by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. The travel and tourism sector accounts for over 10% of Italy’s total GDP and more importantly, tourism fuels at least 11.7% of employment in Italy. And the encouraging growth does not stop there. On-line travel sales generated over 6000million euros in sales and this number is projected to increase to nearly 10,000million euros by 2017. Travellers can easily research holiday destinations, book flights and browse for beautiful Amalfi villas, all from the comfort of their own home.

Recognising the huge positive economic impact that the tourist trade has on Italy, the Ministry of Economic Development showed a strong presence at the annual TTG Incontri fair this year. TTG Incontri, which is the biggest b2b tourism fair in Italy, showcased, with the support of the Ministry, the investment opportunities in the tourism industry and the benefit of encouraging entrepreneurship in this area. The vision, promoted by the TTG Incontri, is that the Italian experience must be a ‘memorable’ one.

Future plans for encouraging and securing further economic growth for Italy through its lucrative tourist trade are finally in motion. Technology will be embraced by the industry in many ways. Proposals include encouraging the use of social media and customised apps to enable travellers to share descriptions and events in the hopes of creating specialised guidebooks. Apps will also be used to promote last minute unsold airline tickets, seasonal deals along with special interest apps focused on culture-based products, wines, art or cuisine. Consequently, visitors will be able to get inside opinions and views on holiday destinations such as Venice, Rome or Amalfi. Villas, sights and events will be able to be previewed thus, encouraging more visitors to come to Italy to experience it for themselves.
