Primary School Pupils Hope For Support From School Travel Companies

A group of Newmarket primary school girls are currently hoping they can either get support from local school travel companies or, alternatively, raise a total of £10.000, in order to be able to pay for a trip to Brazil.

The pupils, who all attend St. Christopher’s Church Of England Primary School, have been specially selected to attend a gaming event in Joao Pessoa, Brazil, but would need to raise the aforementioned sum in order to finance the trip – unless, that is, one of the school travel companies in the area chose to sponsor them, which has not happened up until this point. As such, the Year Six group is thinking of alternative ways to raise this relatively princely sum in time to make the registration deadline, which is set for the end of this month.

Should they be successful in their fundraising goal, the seven Newmarket girls would represent England at the RoboCup Junior International Championships, a tech and gaming event. The group would be competing in the CoSpace section, which sees children use a dedicated software program to make a robot search for objects in a field.

The Newmarket group achieved this honour after their good showing at the United Kingdom National CoSpace Championships, held at Ipswich earlier this year, allowed them to qualify. Pupils from the school nabbed three of the top four positions in their category, a feat which was celebrated with a special ceremony at the local BT headquarters, in Martlesham Heath. In addition to this excellent showing from the pupils, the school itself also picked up the awards for Best Presentation and Most Innovative Programming Strategy at the event.

The Parents and Teachers’ Association for the St. Christopher’s Church Of England Primary School is expected to at least partially fund its pupils’ endeavour, but both the girls and the school board are still hoping for external sponsors for this venture.
