Bristol Example Illustrates How School Travel Companies Broaden Pupil’s Horizons

A recent study carried out by a local newspaper in the Bristol area of the UK has brought to light the importance that school travel companies have been gaining in the broadening of British pupils’ horizons.

The article that contained the results of these surveys was published on the Bristol Post’s website last month, and brought to light some interesting facts regarding the differences between what constituted a ‘school trip’ for Bristolian pupils as recently as ten years ago, as opposed to what the term means to them now.

According to the piece, until very recently, the term ‘study trip’ or ‘school trip’ denoted one of a very limited range of options. Trips abroad were usually to France or Germany, and most remained within the confines of the British Isles, being carried out somewhere like Wales or Scotland. Nowadays, on the other hand, students leaving on a school tour abroad can expect to go almost anywhere in the world, from the Himalayas to Africa or the United States.

The article goes on to attribute much of the responsibility for that change to school travel companies, which have contributed to this broadening of horizons on the part of pupils from the Bristol area, as well as in other parts of the UK and abroad. According to the piece, not only are these types of companies providing pupils with new destinations to visit, they are also encouraging them to take a more pro-active role on the course of their trips, unlike what happened a decade ago. This, according to the write-up, helps make school tours a life-changing experience for pupils, enhancing their value for money.

The importance of social media as a tool to keep parents, relatives and guardians informed of the progress of the trip is also broached by the article, which complements its point with quotes from teachers at local schools.
